Occupier
Street protests around the world, such as the 2014 pro-democracy “Umbrella Movement” in Hong Kong, have resulted in the construction of temporary makeshift barricades. These structures vary widely in material and form, but are all meant to visibly occupy public space, to inhibit the movement of authorities, and to protect protestors. Occupier is a series of 5 interrelated sculptures that explore an “architecture of dissent.” Working from online resources, my sculptures are constructed entirely from hacked IKEA products. Emphasizing familiar references to domestic interiors and the functional design of furniture, yet also expressing the immediate and aggressive characteristics of street barricades, these forms conflate the interior space of the spectator with the exterior space of the activist.
